Review

If you are in the games business then part of your work is to have a close look at every game that comes out just so that you know what the competition is doing. Most of the time this is a quick-quick install, look, uninstall job. Ten minutes. Tops. Simply because you don't really have the time to play through every single game that is out there. But when I tested Luxor a very unusual thing happened. I hit the time limit of the demo version.

Now you might say that you have done that a million times. Hit the time limit. And so have I. But I was not playing. I was working. And I found a real jewel of a game. Considering that normally I am not much in action puzzle games that is even more surprising. Sure. I do like Zuma and some others. But most of my playing-time I spend on space shooters and strategy games.

Anyways. This game is all about rolling spheres that you have to stop from entering your pyramids. They move along pre-set pathes and you can stop them by shooting additional spheres at them. Make a three in a row of the same color and they will explode. Shooting you do from a breakout style panel and hitting spheres or even combos is not that difficult once you get the hang of it.

I have even read some reviews that claimed Luxor to be a little too easy. Come to think of it I cannot tell you what happens if you fail to stop the rolling balls. Still. It kept me nicely occupied and gave me a great feeling of accomplishment.

The game is set in Ancient Egypt and your progress through the levels is reflected on some map of the country with a long, winding path from the Delta up the Nile with a lot of stops marking levels. The music fits the theme of the game well enough and you get that pyramidish, desertish feeling. Well done.
