Review

I checked my traffic statistics and I noticed that Google sends a lot of Mahjong searches my way. So today I will do a review of a Mahjong game. I have to admit that I have not played one for quite a while. Years that is. My most recent Mahjong memory is watching some Chinese movie about professional Mahjong players together with some Chinese friends. In Chinese of course. That was some years ago so we are talking about a tape and not a DVD. With no second audio channel or whatever. Luckily there where Japanese subtitles which helped a lot ;-)

Before that I can clearly remember playing some Mahjong in a school-lab when I was supposed to do something else. That was perhaps some fifteen years or so ago. So I am not really an expert on Mahjong games. But I have always in some peculiar not-exactly-playing way been fond of them.

Now let's see. The recent best-seller has been Mahjong Escape. I had, you know, (mark the grammatical tense) a theory about best-sellers: They sell well for some good reason so I should also get them.

This theory can not be applied, so I have painfully learned, to books and movies. But it has been working pretty well with games so far.

[some time later]

Ah. That felt good. The game is basically the same that it has always been. But a decade of hardware- and software development shows big time. There was a Mahjong game some time ago that had no mouse support and you had to kind of type in the coordinates of the stones. The "good" old times were not that good after all, if you think about it.

Mahjong Escape is nothing short of massive and perfectly polished. The music and backgrounds are Chinese style and relaxing and feel-good. There is a huge map (not unlike the one in Luxor) with a path through all the Chinese dynasties from antiquity to 1912 which is a nice history refresher. When finishing a level you get some piece of Chinese wisdom (just like in my game A.A.L.). And there are in-game hints so after many years of ignorance I do know now, that you can match all the different flower tiles together.

This is a very good Mahjong game. Definitely worth playing.
