Strategy Game: Ant War

Review

Now Ant War is one casual game. It is a strategy game of sorts with a flat zero learning curve. No tutorial but you still get started in a couple of seconds. Not minutes. Seconds. Pressing the "Go" button five times or so will get you right through the first level and probably through a couple more but I don't really know because I just had to start playing seriously after a couple of turns.

I do like ants. Seriously. Always have. I sure hope they will never be stupid enough and try build a colony in my house. But I like them a lot out in the garden. Ants keep everything clean, they usually don't fly around, they built great castles and roads and farms, and they are just fun to watch. Once I saw what I believe to have been a real ant war. Swarms of little creatures biting each other in pairs and groups. At least I think they were biting each other. Ants are pretty small so you can't be sure most of the time.

Anyways. That biting and clawing kind of thing you should not expect in Ant Wars. There was a game that I played a couple of years ago that was about individual insect combat. The name was something like Battle Bugs. Seems to have been by Sierra. The screenshots that I found on the web do not seem familiar though. And it's not for download anymore. Hm. And then there was "Sim Ant" a long(!) time ago. In that game you could control individual ants and run around or zoom out and plague your ant hill with spiders and insect spray. Not so in Ant War.

Ant War is all about distributing resources between food gatherers, nurses, nest builders, and soldiers. A little common sense will help doing this efficiently but is not strictly required. Buying extras like shovels for your tunnel diggers or boots for your food scouts is great fun and satisfying. Moving your colony from the backyard to a garden or a house, a bakery, or a bridge adds a lot of scenery and background and play-value but again does not require any deep strategy or forethought.

This is a light, fun game and clearly meant to be one. The graphics and music are cartoonish and functional, the level of detail is just right, and the variety of locations and weather conditions, and so on keeps the game interesting. Reaching the one billion world domination ants is not difficult and can be done in a couple of hours but this is the kind of game that you can play again and again. Thumbs up.
